How To Choose A Baby-Crib Mattress:

*Measure the width & length of the crib: You will need to measure your crib to determine if a standard crib mattress will fit or if you will need a smaller or larger mattress. Although the size of both cribs and crib mattresses are regulated by the federal government, any slight variations in each means that not every mattress will fit every crib.

*Select a mattress designed for the crib size: Standard crib mattresses feature minimum dimensions of: 27.25″ (69.2cm) by 51.25″ (129.5cm). It’s very essential that a crib mattress fits snugly and there shouldn’t be any space between the mattress and the sides of the crib as this could pose an entrapment or suffocation hazard to your baby.

*Check the thickness of a mattress: Mattresses that are too thick pose a suffocation risk to infants since they can sink into the soft surface. So, a crib mattress should not be thicker than 6″ (15.2-cm).

*Decide on whether you prefer a foam or an innerspring mattress: Foam-mattresses tend to be less expensive while innerspring mattresses typically cost more but offer higher durability. So, in case you choose an innerspring-mattress then get one that has between 135-to-150 coils with a gauge lower than 15.5″. In fact, these numbers can be found on the packaging and the guidelines are set by Consumer Reports to guarantee the mattress you choose is firm enough for your baby.

*Press on different parts of the mattress using your hands: Gently press your hands into the mattress in several spots including the middle and sides to see if the mattress conforms to the shape of your hand or springs back to it’s original shape right away. In case the mattress molds to your hand, then it is too soft for your baby.

*Test the firmness of the mattress: A new crib mattress especially when made from foam needs to be very firm to reduce the risk of your baby suffocating due to sinking into a soft surface. So, you need to perform a test to check the firmness of the mattress by simply collecting 2 full 1-liter or 1-quart rectangular milk or juice cartons with a flat bottom, 12-CDs, ruler, marker & plastic wrap.

*Mark one of the beverage containers: Use the marker to draw a line 1.5″ (40mm) from the bottom of one of the cartons as measured with your ruler. Measure and mark this line on each side of the carton so there is a ring around the bottom.

*Wrap the 12-CDs in a plastic wrap: Stack your CDs (without the cases) neatly on top of one another and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap.

*Stack your items on the mattress: Position the wrapped CDs on the softest part of the mattress which is generally in the middle and then stack both cartons on their sides on top of the CDs while placing the one with the ring at the bottom. After, line-up the edge of the CD-stack with the ring you drew on the carton.

*Take a look at the overhanging portion of the cartons: There should be a clear gap between the bottom ringed part of the carton and the mattress. If there is no gap, you’ll need to choose a firmer mattress for your baby’s safety.

*Make sure that the mattress has been certified: Look for a seal on the mattress confirming that its certified and meets the standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for safe use. In fact, don’t get a mattress that doesn’t have a CPSC seal since it may be too soft, small or even have other safety risks.

*Get a mattress with a very thick cover: A cover is also known as the ticking. In fact, the best mattress options have multiple layers of laminate coating that’s been strengthened with nylon. So, these mattresses have the added benefits of being waterproof and highly durable which makes them easy to cleanup with reduced likelihood of tears or holes.

*Inspect the mattress for any vent holes: A quality mattress should have small reinforced holes on both sides that allow air to circulate in and out of the mattress interior. In fact, these vents will help to keep the mattress fresher by allowing odors to escape.

*Go for an organic mattress if you are concerned about chemicals: Traditional mattresses usually contain heavy metals and chemicals like flame retardants. So, if you prefer a mattress without chemicals or heavy metals then choose an organic mattress that has been certified by a third party like Greenguard or Oeko-Tex.

*Use only a fitted sheet on the crib-mattress: A fitted sheet covering the mattress should be the only thing in the crib aside from your baby. In fact, crib bumper pads, pillows, blankets and toys may pose safety and suffocation risks and should not be used in the crib. Additionally, dress your baby in a warm sleeper or adjust the thermostat to ensure your baby will be warm enough without a blanket. So, only use a blanket in the crib if your child is over 12-months old.

*Put the baby to sleep on their back: To reduce on the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the baby should always be put to sleep on their back. In fact, reserve tummy time for when your baby is awake and you are present to ensure their safety.

*Warnings: Never put a baby to sleep on an air mattress, couch, waterbed or any other soft surface. Additionally, avoid purchasing a used mattress since body fluids from the previous child may have seeped into the mattress causing bacteria, mold or other fungus to grow within thus making your baby sick in the long run. So, always buy a new mattress that fits into your budget to be on safer side.
